John Dougherty Jr. serves as Associate General Counsel in the employment practice group. His practice focuses on employment matters, non-discrimination and civil rights compliance, academic integrity, student and visitor accommodations, and academic freedom and free expression.

Prior to joining ASU, John served as General Counsel and Chief of Staff at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, where he was the university’s sole in-house attorney and a legal advisor to the chancellor and board of trustees. In that role, he also oversaw civil rights compliance, university communications, internal audit, emergency management, and strategic initiatives.

John is a North Carolina native and previously worked in the University of North Carolina System Office, where he provided counsel to the state’s 17-instution system of public higher education. He received his B.A., M.A., and J.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is admitted to practice law in North Carolina.
